Tips for Job Search
- Assess your skills and decide what kind of work you would like to do or are able to do, how many hours you will be available, and how much you need to earn.
- Develop a resume using Western’s free Resume builder, SkillsFirst, and have copies ready.
- Check Job postings as often as possible.
- Be flexible about the kinds of work you are willing to do. Every job provides experience.
- Be able to relate your skills to an employer during an interview on the phone or in-person.
- Consider having contact information for your references. References can be past or current faculty, supervisors/managers, and co-workers. Prior to sharing contact information for a reference, it is important to reach out to confirm they are willing to be a reference for you, share a link to the position description, and ensure you have the correct and preferred contact information for them.
- Keep a record of your job hunting so you know with whom you spoke and if you should check back.
- The staff at the Career Services Center, are excellent resources. Workshops are offered for developing job-hunting skills, and individual assistance with resume and job searching is available through drop-ins at the Career Services Center.
- If you have questions about your Work Study eligibility, or about the off-campus non-Work Study job board, please contact the Work Study Center.
